Stress develops because of some type of trauma, which could be physical, emotional, mental, or environmental. When the body feels threatened or fearful, it goes into what is known as a “fight or flight” response. With this, the body chooses to be strong and fight the situation or it becomes overwhelmed with stress and tries to flee.

The interesting thing about stress is that every person is affected differently. For some people, the trigger might be something minor whereas for others, it is a full-blown catastrophe. Regardless, when situations become too hard to manage, the outcome is a feeling of stress. The intensity of the stress is what dictates the way in which it manifests.

Minor Stresses

• Heavy Traffic – For the person with a long commute to and from work through heavy traffic, dealing with honking horns, tailgaters, rude people, and running late all add up over time. The stress coming from this type of situation could be handled in a positive or negative way. Appropriate methods would involve listening to music or an audio book while wrong methods might be driving erratically or even getting involved in a situation of road rage.

• Crying Babies – We all know that babies are going to cry and in most cases parents simply do what has to be done to calm the baby. However, some parents become stressed, especially in cases where the baby has colic and cries continually. For relief, the parent needs assistance from family members or friends, getting some time away to regroup. Unfortunately, child abuse is all too common, a reaction when a parent becomes overly stressed and sees no way out.

Major Stresses

• Death or Divorce – Both incidents can create a significant amount of stress for family and friends. For death, if a person lost his or her life at the hands of another person or died at a young age in a horrific car accident, extremely if that person were close to family and friends, the level of stress could be very high. For divorce, if the couple had only recently been married, in situations of an affair, or for couples married a long time, this too is a huge stressor.

• Illness or Trauma – With this, the individual involved, as well as family and friends would all be at risk for stress. For instance, a loved one developing a major illness such as cancer or a situation of murder or serious car accident would be hard to deal with.

People need to recognize triggers that cause them stress so preventative measures could be taken and appropriate solutions identified. Sometimes, stress is the result of something minor such as a pay check being a day late while other times, it is the more serious situation that triggers stress. People can help themselves by being realistic about life expectations, identifying triggers specific to them, and if needed, talking to a professional that can provide guidance in handling the situation in a safe and effective manner.

Typically, when people think of stress, they immediately think of negative things and while true, stress can be positive as well. Stress produced from negativity can virtually stop people from succeeding, building relationships, and in many cases, from functioning in daily life. In the case of positive stress, this can be used to help a person become motivated, learn, mold to life changes, or create innovative solutions.

While good stress is actually beneficial, negative stress is often too much for a person to handle. As a result, that person may experience physical or physiological symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, fatigue, depression, low self-esteem, anger, isolation, and so on. Whether negative stress is minor or major, to the individual, it can be debilitating.

The following six methods have been proven to provide relief, helping people deal with the actual stress, as well as triggers that cause it.

1. Visualization or Guided Imagery – It takes a little time to hone skills using this method but for relieving stress, it works well by helping the individual relax. While sitting in a quiet place and with the eyes closed, the person would envision a pleasurable place or experience. By switching focus to something positive and peaceful, stress begins to fade.

2. Breathing Methods – Another excellent way to prevent and control stress is by using deep breathing methods. In addition to allowing the mind to become quiet, this also increases oxygen in the blood, which helps revitalize the brain and relax the muscles.

3. Massage – A professional masseuse would use the appropriate depth of touch to reduce stress. Massages are performed in darker rooms that often include soft music, candles, and aromatherapy. By working the muscles, the individual begins to relax not just the mind, but also the body as circulation improves, tensions melts away, and a feeling of euphoria is produced.

4. Meditation– Meditation has been used for thousands of years for therapeutic and religious purposes. Using meditation helps by calming the mind and enhancing mood, but it also reduces blood pressure and heart rate, as well as levels of adrenaline and stress hormones.

5. Yoga – This ancient form of therapy and relaxation to balance the mind and body remains popular in today’s world. While yoga was often used for religious purposes, it is now more of a tool for reducing stress. Each position associated with yoga balances different parts of the body to include the digestive system, central nervous system, and glandular system. The slow movements and strategic poses create a sense of peace.

6. Music Therapy – For all levels of stress, music therapy is highly beneficial. Numerous studies have been conducted on this method with results showing that a person’s mood improves, muscles of the body relax, and stress is alleviated.

As well as psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression, stress can also cause physical ailments, including aches and pains. Migraines, in addition, can be caused by stress. Since pain can have an impact on the overall quality of your life, it’s important to find ways to find stress reduction in an attempt to manage your pain and stress.

Stress can cause a variety of types of pain including stomach pain, backaches, leg cramps, headaches, and even joint pain. It can be frustrating since it’s difficult to accept the fact that the pain is being caused by a psychological reason and not a physical reason.

Ironically, chronic pain that is not stress-related can also lead to stress. In that way, pain and stress is almost a catch-22. Luckily, there are several ways that you can reduce your stress which will also hopefully help you reduce the pain that you experience as well.

Imagery is one of the easiest ways to manage pain and reduce stress. Focusing on pleasant events or positive imagery will not only distract your mind and take it off of the pain and stress at hand, but it will also lead to endorphins which can alleviate the pain. To do this, you should focus on an image that makes you happy, like a good memory or a peaceful scene such as a rolling hillside full of flowers. By imagining the details and putting your energy into the positive image, it could possibly help in stress reduction.

Meditation is also a common practice used in pain and stress reduction. A popular form of meditation is the “body scan.” When doing this, the person focuses on each individual part of the body and attempts to make it relax. If you’re feeling pain in a specific area, you can also do this to try to lift the pain from that part by imagining that it is going away. Meditation can also be used with positive imagery as well.

Yoga, which in some cases also uses mediation, can increase body awareness and be helpful in reducing stress and pain. It is a quiet type of exercise that focuses on flexibility and fluid movements.

Stress reduction can also be gained by practicing hobbies or other enjoyable activities as a means to manage the stress. Journaling, horseback riding, going for walks, or even painting are all good ideas to try when it comes to attempting to reduce your stress. The general idea is that once your stress level decreases, your pain will as well.

Chest pain can be a scary thing. Even the most rational thinking person can get pains in their chest and fear that they are having a heart attack. Chest pains, however, are also one of the most common symptoms of a panic or anxiety attack. Chest pain can also be associated with stress.

When chest pain is stress-related, it is generally not a sign of heart disease. As a matter of fact, it is usually not associated with the heart at all, as difficult as that might be to believe. For one thing, when chest pain is caused by stress, the pain tends to be located in the center of your chest. Your heart, of course, is not situated in the center of your chest.

So what causes the chest pain?

Well, the part of the spinal cord that gets pain signals is near the same area that gets signals for chest pain. One area can more or less bleed into another area, making you feel as though you are having heart pain. In actuality, it is just chest pain and not your heart.

When the body is stressed, it turns on a defense mechanism in order to fight the stress. Sometimes, the body thinks it is in actual danger when it’s not. At any rate, it’s ready to fight! When this occurs, you might notice other physical symptoms such as breathing quickly, your muscles tightening, your adrenalin kicks in, and your pupils dilating. With all of this going on inside of you, your chest can actually tighten. This, in turn, can cause the chest pain.

Oddly enough, once the chest tightens and the pain is caused, it can lead to further stress on your body. You might begin to panic at the tightening of your chest, which can actually intensify the pain.

People who experience anxiety associated with their stress are more likely to experience chest pain. Anxiety can stem from stressful situations such as trouble at work, frictions within personal and professional relationships, and big life changes like a new baby or a move. Anxiety is generally caused by fear and many people who suffer from anxiety go on to have anxiety attacks or panic attacks.

Stress is not always a bad thing. As a matter of fact, some stress is good. Stress can produce adrenalin and make us motivated. Our bodies occasionally need the stimulation that stress can provide. However, if you are experiencing chest pain with stress on a regular basis, it doesn’t hurt to check with your physician to make sure that everything is okay.

Most people think that stress is only caused by negative episodes, such as arguing with your partner or getting in trouble at work. Actually, however, there can also be good stress like getting a pay raise or landing a new job. Stress is simply a change to your routine, good or bad. With that being said, negative stress can often have troubling symptoms that can directly impact your quality of life. Read on to learn how stress can affect your life.

Stress can actually lead to some very troubling illnesses. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is one disease that is long-lasting and has been linked to stress. Some people with CFS have even had to quit their jobs and have become confined to a wheelchair.

Stress can also aggravate other illnesses. Women might suffer from heavier, more painful periods when they are stressed. If they have endometriosis, stress can also aggravate the condition. Stress might also lead people to developing insomnia, as well as other aches and pains, including chronic migraines.

Hair loss, facial breakouts, weight gain and weight loss, and teeth grinding at night (bruxism) have all been associated with stress as well.

Stress can affect your life in emotional ways as well as physical ways. A person who is stressed might find that they have decreased sexual desire or lack of energy. They also might become short-tempered or argumentative. In addition, some people who are very stressed end up depressed.

People who become overly stressed sometimes have a difficult time becoming de-stressed. Even activities that were once enjoyable might become joyless and meaningless. This can take a particularly hard toll on those people that have families. In these cases, everyone in the family might end up suffering.

Stress might also lead to some people experiencing panic attacks. Panic attacks can come on suddenly and be very scary. With the tightness in your chest, shortness of breath, and tingling in your limbs you could even feel as though you are having a heart attack when you’re having a panic attack.

Bad stress can basically affect your life in every possible way imaginable. Not only can it cause psychological symptoms, but it can lead to illness as well. The best thing to do if you’re feeling stressed is to find some way to reduce it, whether it be a physical activity or something simple, like giving yourself more “me time.” If you find that you’re unable to manage your stress, however, then you should consider consulting a physician so that stress does not going on affecting your life.

Learning stress management techniques can help lower your stress and keep it manageable. Stress is a part of life, we live in a world where we are all in hurry, and most of the time have no idea where we are going.

The three most important stress management techniques a person can learn are listed below.

1. Learn to relax. Even when life is crazy and there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to complete all our tasks, we have to make time to relax. It does not matter how you relax, just learn to relax! Relaxation is as important to the body as food, water and sleep. No one can go non stop without becoming severely stressed. Severe stress leads to medical conditions that no one wants to be diagnosed with!

2. How to relax. This may sound like a simple suggestion however, you would be amazed at the amount of people in the world who think they are taking time to relax, but in reality have no idea how to relax! Relaxation is as simple as quieting your mind and resting your body at the same time. Just for the record sleeping does NOT count as relaxing! Relaxing must be done while awake. Surely you have a hobby or two that you enjoy whether it be playing golf, swimming or crafts. By participating in a hobby you enjoy and leaving all your worries/stress out of that hobby, you have learned to relax!

3. Stress management can also be addressed in classes and through support groups. Some people probably more than you even realize, have no stress management abilities at all. These people are like the Energizer bunny they just keep going and going and going! Until one day the body becomes physically exhausted and the mind goes “WOW! Hold on! What just happened here?” That is known as your breaking point. Perhaps you have already reached that point, or you know it’s not far behind lurking in the shadows!

If you want to live a long and healthy life it’s time to stop what your doing and reevaluate what is important to you. Many people find that eliminating one or two “have to do” things a day or week can make their stress manageable.

While others have pushed themselves so far beyond their limits, they have no choice but to make major lifestyle changes, some of which include giving up life long careers for a less stressful one. I have known people who’s stress became so severe, because of their lack of stress management abilities they have quit their jobs and moved thousands of miles away just to get away from it all and try again so to speak.

Stop what your doing and take notice of what your body and mind are trying to tell you. Those constant headaches, slight depression, mood swings and the desire to go out for a pack of smokes (especially if you don’t smoke) and get lost on the way home, are tell tale signs you need to learn some stress management skills and fast!

There are numerous symptoms of stress. Stress comes in three levels; mild, moderate and severe. Once a persons stress level reaches severe the next step is Anxiety. Which is a disorder that you really want to avoid if at all possible. You can get a grip on your stress in any of the three phases, with a little work and patience. Your stress most likely didn’t show up overnight, it is the result of putting too much pressure or allowing others to put to much pressure on you over a period of time. Each person has a different level of stress they can comfortable handle, so your stress may be the result of a few days of pressure or 10 years of pressure.

You may be feeling a little off if this is your first run in with stress, so hopefully if you recognize some of the symptoms it will put your mind to ease that what you are experiencing are classic symptoms of stress. Then you can take the steps to reduce or eliminate it. The important thing is to be able to recognize the symptoms of stress and take care of them before they escalate to a higher level or turn into an Anxiety disorder.

The top 10 symptoms of stress are listed below.

8. Feel like all the responsibilities of work or home or both are all yours to deal with.

9. Not enough hours in the day

10. Physical symptoms if experiencing moderate to severe stress include (headaches, muscle aches, chest pain, insomnia, sleeping to much, upset stomach and general feeling of nervousness or illness.)

All of the above are symptoms of stress and if you do not find time to relax or reduce your stress levels the intensity of the symptoms can and most likely will increase. It may seem like a huge chore to get your stress under control, and for some people it may be. Just take it a day at a time. Try relieving your stress by making time to do something you enjoy for at least 30 minutes each day. If you’re a people pleaser, spend five minutes a day in front of a mirror learning to say one of the first words you learned as a small child, “NO!”

These simple suggestions can go along way in reducing not only the symptoms of stress, but the stress its self.

Everyone experiences a small amount of stress from time to time. This is what is known as healthy stress. Healthy stress is necessary to keep your brain and body communicating. In the event of an emergency, or better known as a “flight or fight” situation it’s essential that your body receives the message from your brain to either fight or flight. Without this message you would not know what to do and the results could be life threatening.

It’s when we become overloaded with stress that emotional and physical signs start to appear and raise havoc with our lives. There are several signs of stress, listed below are the most common.

Lack of energy

Loss of interest in things you enjoy

Easily aggregated

Mood swings

Cry easily

Loss of appetite

Early signs of anxiety (fear, edgy or nervous a lot of the time)

You can determine if you are suffering from stress by how many of the ten signs of stress you have.

To gauge the severity of your stress level rate the signs listed above on a scale of one to five. With one being the lowest and five the highest. If you find that you rate three or more of the symptoms at a level five then you have moderate stress. Any more than three signs rated as a five is an indication you are on your way to severe stress.

If stress is not addressed and taken care of it can develop into an anxiety disorder. To prevent your stress from getting any worse, take note of what is causing you stress. If you need to, write it all down and try to come up with a solution to resolve the situation(s) before they get any worse.

The best ways to lower your stress is to get organized, delegate responsibilities and stop putting so much pressure on yourself, you are only human after all!

When your over stressed finding stress relief can be like trying to find a needle in a hay stack! Mostly in part because your brain is beyond even understanding what stress relief is let alone being able to find some stress relief.

Everyone has stress! I know that statement most likely doesn’t make you feel any better, nor can you even appreciate the fact that your not alone. That is understandable and in order to find some stress relief in your life you need to STOP what your doing right now, (well, when your finished reading this article) not when you finish that huge project for work or take the kids to practice, or finish mowing the grass or cooking dinner. Just STOP what your doing!

Take a deep breath and ask yourself “What would relieve my stress?” The first thing that pops into your mind, whether it be a vacation, a evening out, a good game of golf or a visit to the beauty salon for a complete makeover. I understand you may not be able to just drop everything and go do that. So you do the next best thing. You plan that stress relief activity that popped into your mind.

Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen, or at your keyboard and plan your stress relief day or vacation. Don’t plan it for a month from now, the sooner the better. By planning you are doing two things, one allowing your mind to wander away from stress temporarily (which is more beneficial than you most likely realize.) The second thing is when your stress becomes over whelming your plans will give you some stress relief just by thinking about them. Of course, once you take that stress relief day or vacation you will be able to relax and renew your mind and body.

Everyone needs to make time for themselves regardless of how busy and hectic your life may be. No ones life is suppose to be constant work! It is suppose to be as much fun as it is work and until you realize you are worthy of some fun and enjoyment in life you will suffer. So don’t waste another second start planning that stress relief day or vacation right now! There is only one key to stress relief and that is fun and relaxation!

Learning how to deal with stress, doesn’t have to cause you even more stress. Most people do not even realize they have stress until it begins to invade their professional and private life. At that point the feelings of being overwhelmed turns into stress.

Learning how to deal with stress is as easy as learning a couple of stress reducing techniques. Even if these few stress reducing techniques are something you are already doing, then take a closer look because either you are really not doing them or your not doing enough of them.

Get and stay organized – This technique is beneficial for both your professional and personal life. An organized person is less likely to experience stress, due to the fact that they know what is going on, and they know when enough is enough, and have the ability to say “NO!”

Learn to delegate responsibilities – If you have a busy household then sharing the responsibility of the children and chores is essential no one person can do everything all of the time! Especially if both adults have jobs outside of the home as well. If your professional life is causing you stress, you have two choices depending on your position of employment. If you’re in a position to delegate responsibilities to other employees then do so. If your not and your employer is not understanding of the stress your job causes your perhaps it is time to find a less stressful job.

Take back your life – This technique is the best one yet! If stress has taken over your life then you need to take it back! You may have to make some sacrifices and no one can tell you exactly how to do this, it’s one of those things where you know what is best for you emotional and physically and the decisions have to be yours.

While you may be wondering how those three techniques are going to help you deal with your stress, you’re going to have to implement them into your life and see for yourself! I guarantee you will notice an improvement within a week.
